Physiotherapy Is One of the Most AI-Proof Careers

As AI takes over more jobs, students are asking: What kind of career will still need me in 10, 20, or 30 years? We spoke with Thomas Schmidt, a Berlin-born expert in both AI and medicine, to explore why becoming a physiotherapist may be one of the best decisions a future-minded student can make.
Mr Schmidt, let’s get right to it. Is physiotherapy really AI-proof?
Yes—and not many careers are. Physiotherapy is incredibly human. It’s about movement, pain, motivation, and touch. AI can help physiotherapists do their job better, but it won’t replace them. A robot can’t do manual therapy, adjust a patient’s plan based on how they feel today, or build trust and emotional connection.
What can’t AI do that physiotherapists can?
AI is great at analyzing data. It can detect patterns in injuries or suggest exercises. But physiotherapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every patient is unique. A good physio listens, watches body language, feels tension in the muscle—and makes decisions in real time. That level of subtle judgment and care? No AI system is even close to matching it.
So does technology play a role at all in physiotherapy?
Absolutely. Tech helps us. We now use sensors to track joint movement, Artificial Intelligence apps to monitor recovery, even VR for rehab. But they’re just tools. A physiotherapist still interprets the data, sets the goals, motivates the patient, and adjusts the plan. The tech supports the human—not the other way around.
Some students worry about job security in the AI era. What’s the outlook for physiotherapists?
It’s strong—and growing. We have aging populations, more sports injuries, and even kids stuck at screens all day developing posture problems. Physiotherapists are needed more than ever. And because the work is personal and physical, it can’t be outsourced or automated. You’ll always be needed, wherever people need to move and feel better.
Why should a high school student today consider studying physiotherapy?
It’s the perfect mix: science, movement, helping people, and a stable career. You’re not stuck at a desk. You make a real impact on people’s lives—daily. And best of all, you’re entering a profession that AI will enhance but never replace. That’s rare these days.
Final advice for students deciding what to study?
Ask yourself: Do I want to do work that matters? Do I want to be active, hands-on, and future-proof? If the answer is yes, then physiotherapy should be on your radar. Your empathy, your brain, your hands—AI can’t match that.
