AMEU Rector, Prof. Dr. Ludvik Toplak
Prof. Dr. Ludvik Toplak
Rector, Alma Mater Europaea University
Dear students of the 17th generation of Alma Mater Europaea University, welcome!
Thank you for the trust you have shown by choosing to study at our university, where you begin your academic journey today. Thanks also to your parents and everyone who encourages you to follow your path and make the right decisions.
Alma Mater Europaea is a university whose graduates are the most employable among Slovenian higher-education institutions. To date, all of our graduates have found employment either at home or elsewhere in Europe.
Alma Mater Europaea brings together the knowledge, innovation and experience needed to shape the future. In recent years we have awarded degrees to more than 1,600 students at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, covering key fields such as the humanities, health sciences, management, the arts, sustainable development, artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
With this we have solidified our position as an internationally recognized teaching and research institution. On the first day of spring, March 21, 2024, the National Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Quality in Higher Education officially accredited our institution as a university.
In cooperation with the world’s most prestigious universities, we involve top experts in our study programmes and promote exchanges and conferences that connect students with global trends and contribute to the advancement of Slovenian science. You—our students—are at the centre of everything we do. All programmes and opportunities are designed for you. Take advantage of the possibilities offered by Alma Mater at partner universities abroad. Practical professional placements at home and around the world are an integral part of our curriculum.
Today you embark on a new chapter of your life—one full of opportunities for growth, development and the discovery of new knowledge. You will not be alone on this path: we are here to support you and stand by your side as you seek answers, face challenges and develop your potential. In addition to lecturers, mentors and tutors, our professional support services are also at your disposal.
Your time as a student is crucial for your professional and personal development, for strengthening friendships and for collaborating with peers and mentors. Build your social network—it will sustain you throughout your life. And remember: the efforts you make today lay the foundations for your success tomorrow.
I wish you a successful and inspiring academic year. Have fun and let’s get to work!
AMEU Academic Council President Prof. Dr. Kristovič
Prof. Dr. Sebastjan Kristovič
President of the Academic Council, Alma Mater Europaea University
Dear first-year students, welcome to Alma Mater Europaea University!
We are delighted that you have chosen to study with us!
With your admission to the faculty, a new chapter in your life’s journey begins.
We will walk this extraordinarily important phase of your life together. Our aim is not only to teach you subject-matter, but also to teach you how to learn. As Alvin Toffler wrote: “In the future world, the illiterate will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
At the same time, we will strive toward a shared goal: that you become autonomous, responsible, and ethical professionals in your field. Our objective is not merely a formal education or the transmission of facts, but the development of a well-rounded, purposeful, and integrated personality—one that cares for and foremost preserves the dignity of the people with whom it works.
I sincerely hope you give your life genuine substance, make meaningful choices, and turn your life into a beautiful and noble story.
Part of that story begins here at Alma Mater, and I am convinced that together we will kindle the very “fire” Plato spoke of: “A young person is not an empty vessel to be filled with knowledge, but a fire to be kindled.”
I wish you a fruitful and creative course of study!
AMEU Vienna Director - Prof. Dr. Jurij Toplak
Academic Dean of the Physiotherapy Degree Program, Dr. Maximilian-Niklas Bonk

Rules and Guidelines
Technical Requirements
Students need a reliable Internet connection and a device equipped with a camera, speaker, and microphone in order to fully participate in online lessons and exams.
Attendance
Students are strongly encouraged to attend all lectures and practical exercises. Students may take an exam in a given course only if they meet the minimum attendance requirements:
Lectures: 80%
Practical exercises: 100%
Lectures:
A student is considered present if:
- They attend the lecture either in person or online
OR
- Within seven days they watch the video recording and submit a summary via Moodle.
Online, a student is considered present if their camera is turned on and they remain responsive when addressed for the entire duration of the lecture. A student who joins an online lecture more than three minutes late or leaves early is considered absent for that session and may submit a summary to be considered present. In each Moodle course there will be a section where you can upload the summaries.
Example:
A student attends 10% of the lectures in a course with their camera on.
Watches 70% of the lectures later and submits summaries within seven days.
Does not attend or watch 20% of the lectures.
Question: Does the student fulfil the attendance requirements for the lecture?
Answer: Yes, because in total he was marked present in 80% of the lectures (10% + 70%)
Practical Exercises:
A student is considered present if they are present, prepared, and actively participating for the entire duration of the practical session. If the student is not present for the full duration, they are considered absent for that session. A student with a provable and excusable reason, such as illness or a death in the family, may complete the missed practical session at another location (Klagenfurt, Vienna, or Slovenia), provided that the alternative session is still available within the same academic year and has an open spot.
Attendance is highly recommended but voluntary. Zoom discussions will not be recorded and no summaries will be provided. If you are unable to attend, you are responsible for independently research and meet program requirements.
Plagiarism
For every assignment you submit during your studies, you must strictly cite all sources. Any draft or final version of essays, projects, take-home exams, computer programs, presentations, seminar papers, or other work must consist of your own words and ideas, and all sources must be clearly referenced. The same rules apply to the use of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT).
Detailed instructions on citation and source attribution are in the third chapter of the Guidelines for Preparing Professional and Scientific Texts.
Communication
In an academic environment, clear and respectful communication is essential. When e-mailing a professor or writing a formal request, introduce yourself (year, program, course) and briefly state your question or request.
Include a subject line. Due to privacy laws and university regulations, university will only communicate to adult students directly. We can’t share your data to parents, boyfriends, employers, or others.
Example
Subject: Thesis topic inquiry
Dear Professor,
I am Stefan Wagner, a second-year physiotherapy student in Vienna.
Could you please let me know if History of Physiotherapy in Tirol is a good topic for my Bachelor Thesis?
Kind regards,
Stefan Wagner
Review FAQ and Moodle before emailing. Direct any course-specific questions, including about the syllabus, course content, lecture slides, literature, or exams, to the lecturer directly. Direct inquiries about schedules, study program, or student status.
Online exams
For online exams you will use exam.net, our secure online examination platform that enables a lockdown environment to prevent opening other apps or browser tabs.
Here are instructions on how to take online exams, including rules. Read it carefully to ensure the process runs smoothly. Before your first online exam, all students will carry out a simulation with a member of our Tech team, so that you get familiar with the whole process.
Clinical Training (Praktikum)
Bachelor in Physiotherapy program includes mandatory clinical placement at one of Alma Mater’s partner clinics. You will receive all necessary information and forms at the end of November 2025, please wait until that time before contacting us with questions.
The internship takes place in the second semester, after you have completed some important foundational courses—particularly the course Physical Factors in Therapy, which is scheduled for February and March. Heilmasseurs may start it earlier – in late January.
For the first year of study, 150 internship hours are planned. You can complete these between April and the end of September 2026. Scheduling is flexible: you can, for example, complete the internship in 18 consecutive days or spread it over several weeks (for instance, 36 days at 4 hours each or any other combination). Internships are usually unpaid, but if your institution offers you compensation, you can arrange this individually.
At the end of November 2025 we will send you further information. After that, you can either look for a placement yourself and propose a clinic, or we will provide you with a list of partner clinics. Once you have found an internship position, please send us the institution’s contact details—we will then take care of the administrative process. If you propose a clinic or physio location yourself: it should have at least three physiotherapists.
During clinical placement you must:
Follow all institutional regulations and professional standards, including work hours and procedures.
Comply with uniform and hygiene standards (professional attire, neat hair and nails, no visible piercings, punctuality).
Adhere to the professional code of ethics for physiotherapists or nursing staff, demonstrate respect for patients, families, and other healthcare or non-healthcare professionals you encounter.
See an overview in Clinical Practice during the Studies and in Clinical Practice Book.
